Photo Storage and Back-up
27/01/10 23:07
As a professional photographer, Back-up is critical. Multiple camera bodies, multiple lens, multiple flash, multiple memory cards. I never know when something will go bad. On my primary event camera, the Nikon D3, I have two memory card slots so that I record to both memory cards. I also upload all the photos to an alternate storage device prior to leaving an event. Remember BACK-UP. In the past I have had a photo viewing storage device, Epson, makes one, Nikon makes one, Jobo makes one, and these devices are quite expensive. And I have broken the power connector on two such devices.
So now I need another storage device. Enter the Netbook. For the same kind of money as the photo viewing storage device, I can now have a Netbook. The 10 inch is too small, Mac Book is too expensive. And 2010 comes in to offer a 12 inch, dual-core processor Netbook with 4GB memory (upgrade), 250GB Hard Drive, Win 7 and other features… the ASUS 1201N. I now have added this Netbook to my photo equipment. Specs looked to put this machine right at the forefront of good computing. This is easily one of the best notebooks that have come along in a long time. It comes with 2G memory, 1.75G useable . I have actually upped the memory to 4GB, 3.5GB useable...it runs much better.
Win 7 starts up very fast, I'm very impressed. The screen is crisp and clean. The keyboard is just the right size for a small laptop. The Netbook fits into any soft or hard size briefcase, out of sight, out of mind. Battery probably last less than 5 hours but certainly long enough to perform my back-ups. And there is a built in SDHC memory card slot…anybody say additional back-up? For you computer people: Software: Microsoft office 2007 home comes in a trial version,. Internet Security: Trend Micro trial version Email: Downloaded thunderbird, works great.
FireFox for Internet surfiing Being a professional Photographer, I've added the LightRoom Beta 3. The memory upgrade was primarily for my photos and this has made LightRoom acceptable to use. With only the 2GB, manipulating photos was slow, 4GB is really required if you want to process photos. NOTE: Processing photos is probably not what this laptop was designed for but it does work.
Wireless connections: Windows is never as easy to connect as MAC OS. What can I say? And, IMO, wireless connections are more dependent on the wireless network then the computer. I've had no problems so far by when in my home office, I always hardwire anyway, much faster network connection that way. Three (3) USB connections...probably enough...especially since there's Bluetooth. HDMI connection for tying directly to HDTV...haven't tried this yet.
